Retirement Quilt

The 2nd graders surprised me with a delightful quilt for my retirement. Each student in the class designed and colored a square for the quilt. The quilt is as unique and special as each of the students I have taught in my 29 years at North Winn.

Field Trip Day

The second graders visited Winneshiek County Recycling on May 10. Terry Buenzow showed us the materials from the big blue bins and then the huge bales of materials ready to be sold. The students tho ught the machines and bales were awesome. They were amazed at how many items get recycled in one day!
We then went to Phelps Park in Decorah to eat lunch, play on the equipment and hike on the trails. We were lucky to have a gorgeous spring day for our trip!

Muffins for Moms

Muffins for Moms started the day! We had many moms, grandmas, and friends at North Winn.

The students had fun starting the day eating a donut and sharing a book with Dad, Grandpa, or a friend!

Luther Science Teachers

Four future science teachers from Luther College taught three lessons to the second graders about forces and motion. The unit was called "Sheep in a Jeep." The Luther teachers had the students conduct many interesting and fun experiments!

Reading Adventure

The North Winneshiek elementary students read hundreds of books and thousands of pages during March! The pirate theme was "Read a book, Find an Adventure." At the end of the month the students enjoyed special pirate activities in the gym.

Read to Swim!

The 2nd graders celebrated meeting their March reading goals with a trip to the Cresco Fitness Center. It is a great facility and the students had a great time!

Catching Up on January Activities

The second graders enjoyed participating with Luther College students in January. The Luther students led activities that focused on the six Character Counts pillars: caring, fairness,respect, responsibility, trustworthiness and citizenship. They played and built projects with the Luther students on the playground during afternoon recess. The students built a huge face and outlined it with food coloring. They also hung oranges in the trees to share with our feathered friends.

Mrs. Schwartzhoff and Miss Cooperman from Helping Services for Northeast Iowa are presenting a substance abuse prevention program called Puppet Pals to the 2nd graders. The six half-hour lessons are taught through the use of six lovable puppets. The concepts are sharing their feelings, peer pressure, good decision making, coping skills, alcohol and nicotine are drugs, and asking for help for any kind of problem. The students really enjoy the puppet plays and stories!

The students from 2nd grade and 6th grade presented the play "The Sneetches" for the January Character Counts assembly. The Sneetches who had stars on their bellies thought they were the best Sneetches on the beach until Sylvester McBean came along with his machine. It took stars off and put stars on and in the end all the Sneetches were confused and decided the stars did not make a difference. The Pillar of Character for January was fairness!

Holiday Music Concert

Last night the North Winn students put on a wonderful performance of songs, actions, dancing, and instrumentals! They are directed by Mrs. Cathy Evelsizer. The 1st and 2nd graders are seen above with the finale to "Santa Claus Rock!"

The 2nd graders used their skills to create a forest of decorated evergreen trees! It is always fun to create symmetrical shapes using a folded piece of paper. The trees are as unique and special as every student!

Winter at North Winn!

Yes, winter weather is here! We had to cancel school on December 9 and 10 because of about 10 inches of snow and blizzard warnings. Now the 2nd graders are enjoying the hills of snow Dusty created as he cleared out the parking lot.

VIP Day

We enjoyed many "Very Important People" at our annual VIP Day on November 25. The second graders read a poem "The Turkey Shot Out of the Oven" by Jack Prelutsky. It was terrific to see about 160 friends and family come to eat with the North Winn students.

Today we were invited to listen to the 3rd graders present four reader's theater stories. The stories were about the discovery of America and the exploration of our country. The 2nd graders were impressed with the expression, actions and smooth reading by the 3rd graders. They also enjoyed hearing a reader's theater because they are starting to practice a reader's theater poem for VIP Day on November 25.

This week is Character Counts Week at North Winn. The six Pillars of Character are caring, fairness, respect, trustworthiness, citizenship and responsibility. Special dress-up days are fun for the students and a reminder to work on these character traits!

Census 2010

North Winneshiek School is a partner with the Census Bureau for Census 2010. These new shirts worn by the students will remind everyone to make sure they are counted in the census next spring.

Porter House Museum

The 2nd graders visited the Porter House Museum in Decorah on September 8. They saw the amazing butterfly and insect collections of Bert Porter. Thanks to Midge for the great tour! We then went to the Decorah Prairie for a short hike among the beautiful plants and flowers.

Monarch Magic

The 2nd graders are in the middle of some Monarch magic! We collected Monarch butterflies and placed them in our butterfly cage. We keep the caterpillars supplied with fresh milkweed and have found them to be big eaters! The students were amazed to see some of the caterpillars shed the last skin and see the beautiful chrysalis that was formed! We are now waiting to see the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly!
